My focus in reimagining the 'SAP Investigative Case Management' framework was to fundamentally shift how case workers, the investigators, interact with their data. The existing system was essentially a log-based register of events. My vision was to transform it into a dynamic, direct interaction environment – a 'Connection Discovery' platform, as it ultimately became known.
The impact I aimed for was profound: to empower investigators to not just see events, but to actively search, explore, and truly understand the intricate relationships that exist between multiple entities across one or more cases or incidents. Imagine an investigator being able to visually map out connections between individuals, locations, assets, and events, uncovering crucial links that might be buried deep within traditional lists and logs.
This wasn't just a cosmetic redesign. It was a complete rethinking of the user experience, moving from a passive consumption of data to an active exploration of interconnected information. The 'Before' – Investigative Case Management – presented data in a linear, often overwhelming format. The 'After' – Connection Discovery – offered a visual network, allowing investigators to intuitively navigate complex webs of relationships, identify patterns, and gain a holistic understanding of their cases.
My role as the UX Designer on this project was central to this transformation. I focused on creating an intuitive and powerful interface that would enable investigators to seamlessly uncover hidden connections and accelerate their investigations. The impact of this work is evidenced not only in the product details and news articles highlighting its real-time decision-making capabilities for public services, but also in the recognition through two patents. Furthermore, industry case studies demonstrate the tangible value and effectiveness of this network visualization framework in real-world investigative scenarios. My contribution was driven by the belief that by providing investigators with the right tools to visualize and understand connections, we could significantly enhance their ability to solve complex cases and ultimately contribute to a safer society.
