As a designer passionate about road safety, I was deeply involved in a project focused on Proreta, an innovative driver-assistance system with the potential to significantly reduce high-speed accidents caused by driver error. Our core mission was to explore and define how drivers could interact with Proreta's alternative steering capabilities, moving beyond the traditional steering wheel.
Working collaboratively in a team of interaction and product designers, we joined forces with the existing Proreta team. Our assignment was to brainstorm a range of impactful input methods and intuitive feedback mechanisms that would empower drivers to confidently and effectively utilize Proreta's steering assistance. We understood that the success of this system hinged on creating a seamless and trustworthy experience for the driver.
Through intensive design workshops with key stakeholders, we delved into the nuances of driver behavior and the critical requirements for a safe and effective alternative steering system. Our discussions explored various potential input methods that could offer precise and natural control, even at high speeds. Simultaneously, we brainstormed feedback mechanisms that would provide drivers with clear and immediate information about Proreta's actions and the vehicle's response. In our context, a 'turn' was primarily considered a lane change, a frequent maneuver where precise control is paramount for safety.
The diverse options we discussed during these ideation sessions, along with the proposed feedback mechanisms, represent our collective effort to push the boundaries of driver-assistance technology. Our goal was to contribute to a system that not only minimizes driver errors but also enhances the overall driving experience, ultimately leading to safer roads for everyone. The Proreta prototype, as envisioned, embodies our commitment to leveraging design thinking to create impactful solutions in the automotive safety domain
